This weekend on my Facebook page I did a page share post. Someone share a page for an artist they love, which I think is awesome (and the artist was too!) However, she apologized because it wasn’t autism related.
I suddenly realized that is a problem. For all of us. We may be autism parents but we are also people. We have hopes, dreams, and hobbies (well when we have time for them). We have things we like outside of being a parent, things we love besides our kids.
Most parents loose a bit of ourselves when we become parents. In the loving, feeding, changing and not sleeping we forget to take time for us. We often forget that we enjoy things like reading, music, art, poetry, or movies. It is easy to do, your tired, your caught up in everything that needs to be done. We all do this; even if you are not an autism parent. Our lives begin to revolve around our kids and we get lost in the shuffle.
I too put me on hold for a long time. Slowly I am learning that I need me time too. Me time to let me recharge, even if it is 5 minutes a day just doing something I adore. I know it makes me a better person and a better mom. More than that, I share things on my Facebook page, stuff that has nothing to do with autism, because I know even if you are an autism parent, you are a person.
Even when it feels like we eat, breath and loose sleep over autism, we still need to laugh, love, and learn. We need to see things that make us feel and think. I keep themes song Thursday going because I adore music and I love hearing what people share with me. I share jokes and memes about coffee and wine really anything that makes me giggle. I share heart warming, faith restoring videos and stories because we all need to be reminded the world isn’t all bad. I even share geeky stuff because I am a geek and love things like Dr Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, Avengers, and Firefly.
Try and remember moms are people too, even if you are one. Because everyone matters, you included. Take care of you!
I know we all can’t get a spa day but wouldn’t that rock?
Happy Monday! Go take on the day!
